The challenge of preventing salt fog corrosion for offshore wind turbine foundations
July 30,2025

The offshore wind power projects have grown rapidly in recent years. However, the issue most frequently mentioned by the customers is not the cost, but salt fog corrosion.
One customer shared that some ordinary hot-dip galvanized supports in offshore projects developed large-scale white rust within just 3-5 years and even required premature replacement.
The core issue here is not the material strength, but the suitability of the surface treatment. Is the coating thickness sufficient? Has the process undergone salt fog testing? These factors are more decisive for the lifespan than "whether the steel is Q235 or Q355".
In other words, offshore wind power customers are more concerned about: Will the supports still be there 10 years later? This is more practical than any short-term low cost.
